1) Relate what was discussed in class or
the text to the screening
The stagecoach was
an American Western film that was released in 1939, directed by John Ford and
starring by Claire Trevor and John Wayne. According to the screen, which the
professor showed in the class, “Stagecoach is a metaphor for society” which
means that a society has to have law but there are people who carry a just law
within themselves.
Moreover, in the class
we talked about John Ford. Ford won four awards for Best Director of the Informer (1935), Grapes of Wrath (1940), How
Green was My Valley (1941), and The Quiet Man (1952). One the other hand,
Ford made John Wayne famous and legitimate actor for worked as an actor in the
Stagecoach. Wayne worked 24 times with Ford and the best films were The Searchers, Red River, The Quiet Man, The
Man Who Shot Liberty Valence and True Grit (only won an Oscar).
Furthermore, the set of Stagecoach film took place in the decade of 1880 when a group of people where
taking a trip from Tonto to Lordsburgh, and they would have to deal with an
Indian attack. Ford had values that he brought to his movies that include
family, Home, Law, Decency, Religion and Democracy. Ford tends to use more visual images than having
his cast talk a lot and the nature of people. Ford placed four scenes of action
within the movie and he inserted a short prologue, then the first, second and
the third part were the trip that they were taking from Tonto to Lordsburgh.
In conclusion, the Stagecoach film showed the different
themes and roles that each person played, like the Different in social classes,
the sexual, the social prejudice Greed alcoholism, he shame and avenge someone
to be alive. The character of the doctor, who was shame, was a drunk, the
banker, who was only able to think of himself, showed the evil within man heart
and with all of these characteristics Ford made a great movie.
2) Find
a related article and summarize the content
In the article that
I found, the author explains that Stagecoach “is a film in which two great
careers were renewed. Although he had appeared before in many films, as an
extra, a stuntman and then an actor in B films, this was John Wayne's first
starring role in a film by John Ford.” And he also said that With Ford's clout
as a director and Wayne's clout as a star, they made iconic films and established
themselves as one of the legendary partnerships in cinema.
Moreover, The author of
this article also talked about the actors of the film, some of the characters,
why Ford wanted Wayne as an actor of the Stagecoach film and some of the story
of the film.
3)
Apply the article to the film screened in class
In the article that
I chose and the film that was screened in class had some similarities and some
differences between. One of the similarities was that in the article explained
about the social issues Ford wanted to show in the film and the characteristics
of the characters.
The difference between
the article and the screening was that in the article talks more about the
story behind the scenes and in the film screening that we just watched was the story
that the director wanted to show to the audience about his values, and the
social issues of that decade. Also, in the article the author made some
comparisons between the characters, the actors and also between other films.
4)
Write a critical analysis of the film, including your
personal opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions,
text material and the article.
The Stagecoach was one of the best
American western films that John Ford made which made him to win four Best
Director awards as directing the Informer,
Grapes of Wrath, How Green was My Valley and The Quiet Man.
My opinion about this film is that I really enjoy
watching the film even tough at the first time I did not understand it at all.
At the end I could understand everything and I could see that all it said the
text and the article it was true of that John Ford demonstrated what were the
prejudices which they had within society of that era and which there still
exists nowadays.
