1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening
Citizen Kane is an American drama film, which was
released in 1941. This film was directed
and starring by Orson Welles. According
to the screen text, the American Film Institute named the Citizen Kane
for being the best American film of all time.
In the screen text states that when the Citizen
Kane was first released in 1941, it was a commercial failure. In fact, it was almost not released. And RKO almost burned the negative.
Moreover, Citizen Kane had nine Oscar nominations
and only received one award for best screenplay. According to the text and also
of what I watched, the film begins and ends with a shot of the fence around
Xanadu and the “No Trespassing” signs on the outside.
The film quickly kills off the main character,
which is Kane; after we can see the snow globe and he enunciate the word
“Rosebud” which is a mystery that have to be solved.
2) Find a related article and summarize the content
In this article shows that Citizen Kane film was an extraordinary film of the all time. According to the article “Citizen Kane’s unique status in the canon of American cinema is rooted in its singular place in Hollywood history.” It also says “ At the height of the Hollywood studio system, when studio bosses controlled every aspect of filmmaking from production to exhibition, this film was made by a handful of brilliant artists who were given virtually the unprecedented creative freedom to do whatever they wanted.
Moreover, the article states that the film is a spearhead by an extraordinary triple-threat talent, Welles, who co-wrote, directed, and starred in addition to producing and who, at only 25 years old, had cut his teeth on radio and stage, but had never before made a film.
3)Apply the article to the film screened in class
There are some difference
between the article and the film screened in class. In the article talks about
how extraordinary is the film; also it talks about the characters and the
meaning of “Rosebud”. According to the article the ending of the film, “is the explanation of Charles Foster Kane’s
dying word, "Rosebud." The twist behind the twist is that while the
final shot satisfyingly resolves the question with which the picture began, the
whole notion that that the answer to that question would somehow provide the
key to Kane’s life was only a journalistic conceit. The film answers the
question, but refrains from offering any final explanation or judgment of its
complex protagonist, suggesting that a man’s life is more than a riddle to be explained
or resolved.”
And it also says, “that Rosebud isn’t significant.
It is. It signifies innocence lost, regret, and the failure of the American
dream of rags-to-riches success. It also represents what Kane lost at an early
age when he was taken from his mother and father and raised by an unloving
guardian.”
Moreover, in the film screened in class, it only
explained what is the film about and all the information of how was the film
made but the only thing that the film screened in class said about Rosebud is
that the meaning is a mystery that have to be solved.
4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your personal
opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text
material and the article.
The
Citizen Kane film is an American Drama film, which is one of the best films of
all time. In my opinion, I really like it. I also learned with all the
information that the professor taught us in the class, and with the article too.
And I was very curious of what is the meaning of “Rosebud”. I’m still don’t
know what it is because is a mystery but with the information that the article
shows I have an idea now.
