Casablanca

1)  Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening

Casablanca is an American romantic film, which was released in 1942.  It was directed by Michael Curtis, and written by Julius J. and Philip G. Epstein and Howard Koch. The set was during the World War II; and it was focused on a man torn between, in the words of one character, "love and virtue". He must choose between his love for a woman and helping her or escape to the Vichy-controlled Moroccan city of Casablanca to continue his fight against the Nazis.

According to the Flashback book, Casablanca, “like The Wizard of Oz, is one of the happiest accidents of studio system, one of those films made in an atmosphere of uncertainty and confusion that nevertheless meshed perfectly.”  Moreover, this film was in the top 100 films of all times in the third category of the best films of all time like the Citizen Kane and the Godfather.

The director of Casablanca, Michael Curtis won an award as the best director of Casablanca and He was nominated for other films such as the Captain Blood, Angels with Dirty Faces, Four Daughters, and Yankee Doodle Dandy. Casablanca won 3 academic awards for Best Picture, Best Director and Best Screenplay and also was nominated in the categories of, Best Actor  (Humphrey Bogart),
Best Supporting Actor (Claude Rains), Best B/W Cinematography and
Score/Editing.

In conclusion, Casablanca is one of the best films of all time and according to the text screening in class, Casablanca is the near perfect entertainment balance of comedy, romance and suspense”

 2) Find a related article and summarize the content.

This article talks about the plot of Casablanca, the characters, the director and the author of this article describe Casablanca as a “one of the most popular films ever made. It is about a man and a woman who is in love, and who sacrifice love for a higher purpose.”

3)   Apply the article to the film screened in class.
The film screened in class and what I read in this article, it makes me think that this is an amazing film.  To tell the truth, I really didn’t understand some of the conversation between the characters because of the language but when I read the article I could understand some of the story of the movie that I didn’t understand in the first place when I watched the movie.  Also, in the article shows that the actors did not know the person who will be on the plane with Ilsa until the final day of recording the film.

4)     Write a critical analysis of the film.

In my opinion Casablanca is a great film.   The plot of this film was very touched and the director made a good job in showing us this story.  When I watched Casablanca for the first time I really did not understand the story, like I said above, but know when I read the article I understand and I want to watch it again to catch the entire story and enjoy more the film.  Now I know why Casablanca is one of the tops 100 best films of all time!  I would recommend it to my friends!
